Most people are told to visit Meghalaya after the rains stop but this trip exists for the people who'd rather see how Meghalaya looks when it rains in the first place.
Cherrapunji holds the record for the highest rainfall ever recorded anywhere on Earth in a single month. In Monsoon every waterfall in the region runs at its fullest. Nohkalikai Falls, India's tallest plunge waterfall, drops harder. Seven Sisters Falls splits into more streams. Even Elephant Falls, usually a trickle by December, becomes something worth stopping for.
five nights and six days of pure love for rainfall. Starting from Guwahati: Shillong's Laitlum Canyon and hidden waterfalls, Cherrapunji's caves and cliffside views, the descent to the Double Decker Living Root Bridge in Nongriat, and a full day chasing six separate waterfalls in a single stretch of forest.
Bring a raincoat. You won't need an excuse to use it.
Itinerary
Land at Guwahati Airport (GAU) before 12 noon — flights arriving later will miss the group departure. Our representative meets you at arrivals, and the group leaves for Shillong by 12:30 PM. It's a 4-hour drive, with a lunch stop on the way and a halt at Umiam Lake, a reservoir surrounded by pine-covered hills that marks the unofficial start of Meghalaya's landscape. Check in, then spend the evening at Police Bazaar — Shillong's busiest market street, good for street food and a first look at the city's well-known music scene.

Morning at Laitlum Canyon — widely considered Meghalaya's most dramatic viewpoint, with grassland cliffs dropping into a valley that disappears into cloud cover for most of the monsoon season. From there, head to Krang Suri Falls, a turquoise-pooled waterfall framed by limestone cliffs, with time for lunch nearby. The day closes at Phe Phe Falls, where you can climb down for a closer look or swim in the pool beneath it. Return to Shillong for the night.

The drive to Cherrapunji (Sohra) covers roughly 55 km through the East Khasi Hills, with the landscape shifting from Shillong's pine forest into Cherrapunji's open cliffside terrain. Stops include Elephant Falls, Dympep Valley Viewpoint, and the Garden of Caves, followed by Arwah Cave and Mawsmai Cave — limestone caverns with narrow passages and stalactite formations. As evening sets in, the day ends at Nohkalikai Falls, India's tallest plunge waterfall at approximately 340 metres, running at its fullest volume during monsoon. Check in to your Cherrapunji hotel for the next three nights.

The day this trip is built around. From Cherrapunji, drive to Tyrna village and begin the descent toward Nongriat, where the Double Decker Living Root Bridge — two layers of living tree roots, grown and guided by the Khasi tribes over generations — crosses the river below. The trek involves several thousand stone steps each way; monsoon rain makes the steps slick, so footing matters more than fitness here. Continue on to Rainbow Waterfall, a natural pool fed by a high waterfall, ideal for cooling off after the climb back up. Return to Cherrapunji by evening.

Carry a spare set of clothes — today covers more waterfalls than any other day on the trip. The route takes in Wei Sawdong Falls, Dainthlen Falls, Lyngksiar Falls, and Kynrem Falls, before arriving at Seven Sisters Falls — one of the widest waterfalls in India, formed by seven separate streams dropping off the same cliff face, at its most powerful during monsoon. The day closes at Eco Park, a viewpoint built specifically for panoramic shots of the Cherrapunji valley below.

After breakfast, the drive back to Guwahati Airport takes roughly 5–6 hours, with arrival by 3–4 PM. Book onward flights after 6 PM to allow a comfortable buffer. The trip ends here — six days, several thousand steps, and more waterfalls than most people see in a year.
