Departure from Delhi
On Day 0 Reach Delhi by 6 PM. A short briefing follows before the journey starts. Arrive with some buffer, mountain trips run tighter on departure discipline than city travel usually does.
Arrival back in Delhi
You'll be dropped back in Delhi by approximately 10 AM on the final day. Book onward flights or trains after 12 PM to leave a comfortable margin for the last stretch of the drive.
Permits and ID
Indian nationals generally do not need an Inner Line Permit for this route, but carry a valid photo ID throughout, Aadhaar or passport both work, since checks happen at a few points including near Sumdo where you formally enter Spiti Valley. Foreign nationals should confirm requirements directly before booking, rules in this border adjacent region do change.
What this trip actually costs beyond the package
Rs 17,999 for triple occupancy or Rs 19,999 for double, plus 5 percent GST, covers accommodation, transport, monastery entry, your trip captain, and the oxygen cylinder throughout. Budget separately for meals outside the fixed plan, roughly Rs 150 to 300 a meal, the Chandratal entry fee of Rs 150 per Indian national paid on the spot, occasional camera fees at monasteries, and a reasonable amount for personal spending in Kaza.
What to pack
A proper jacket layered over thermals, not a hoodie doing the whole job. Full sleeves during the day, the sun at this altitude burns faster than it feels like it should. Real UV protection sunglasses. A basic personal medical kit, since pharmacies past Kalpa are minimal. A power bank, charging is not guaranteed everywhere. Cash withdrawn before Shimla or Kalpa, cards are unreliable past that point. And a reusable water bottle, plastic waste is a genuine issue here and most homestays now discourage single use bottles.
Mobile network
BSNL, Jio and Airtel works the best. Vodafone networks are gone past Kinnaur. There is no network zone at Chandrataal camps.
Chandratal, what to actually expect
Camping directly on the lakeshore has been banned since 2019 to protect the wetland, and this is enforced, not a loose suggestion. Camps, including the ones used on this trip, sit roughly 2 kilometres away, with a short walk in to reach the water. There is now an entry fee, and a police presence at the lake itself. Swimming is discouraged and the water stays close to freezing even in peak summer. None of this makes the lake any less worth it, it just looks a little different from older photos still floating around online.
Best time to do this trip
June has the greenest landscape and a freshly reopened Chandratal after winter. July and August are peak season, warmest days, but also the window most likely to see short spells of rain affect the Kinnaur stretch. September is generally considered the strongest month by people who have done this more than once, clearer skies, fewer crowds, and the first hints of autumn in the poplar trees around Kaza.
Why go as a group instead of solo
Spiti is not really a place where showing up alone and figuring it out as you go works well. Network disappears for most of the route, ATMs run dry past Kalpa, and altitude affects people in ways that have nothing to do with fitness. Travelling with a group solves the practical side of that, a proper vehicle instead of a shared jeep with strangers going different distances, a trip captain who has actually done this route before, and an oxygen cylinder carried in the vehicle the whole way in case altitude catches someone off guard.
