Most people think Sri Lanka is a small island you can finish in a few days. It looks small on the map, but the roads are slow, the weather changes from one coast to the other, and the hill country needs time. This guide gives you the visa rule, the right months, a route that works for first timers, and the 2026 changes that older blogs miss.
Ready to book and want the planning done for you? The Travel Story runs a Sri Lanka group trip with a trip captain and a batch of 12 to 16 travellers, so you do not sort out buses, stays and timings alone. See the Sri Lanka trip details and check dates, or ask for a callback from the same page.
Key takeaways
- Indian passport holders need an ETA before flying, and it has been free for a 30 day stay since 25 May 2026.

- The full Kandy to Ella train is not running as of 14 October 2026, but Nanu Oya to Ella is.
- UPI works only at shops with a LankaQR code, so carry cash and a card.
- Seven to ten days is enough for one good loop.
- Sri Lanka runs on the same time as India, so there is no jet lag and no clock to change.

Do Indians need a visa for Sri Lanka in 2026?
Indians need an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before they fly, and the tourist ETA is free. The Sri Lankan immigration department says that from 25 May 2026, Indian passport holders can get a free ETA valid for 30 days. It allows double entry inside those 30 days.
Free does not mean no paperwork. Every foreign visitor must hold an ETA before arrival, so do not plan to sort it out at the airport.
How to apply:
- Open the official portal, eta.gov.lk. Use only this site. Third party sites may charge you for something that is free.
- Choose the tourist ETA and fill in your passport and travel details.
- Save the approval. Keep a printed copy or a screenshot with your return ticket and hotel booking.
- Keep proof of funds handy. The ETA terms say officers may ask for a return ticket and proof that you can pay for your stay.
If you want to stay beyond 30 days, you can apply for an extension, and that costs a fee. Rules change, so check the portal again in the week you fly. Last checked October 2026.
Three Sri Lanka visa myths, corrected
| What people say | What is true |
|---|---|
| "The visa is free, so I can just land and walk in." | You still need an approved ETA before you arrive. Apply online a few days before you fly. |
| "A free ETA lets me stay as long as I like." | The free ETA is for 30 days. Staying longer needs an extension, and that costs a fee. |
| "Any website that sells a Sri Lanka visa is fine." | Use eta.gov.lk only. Other sites may add charges for something that costs nothing. |
How to reach Sri Lanka from Delhi
A direct flight from Delhi to Colombo takes about 3 hours 35 minutes. Air India and SriLankan Airlines both fly the route, so check current schedules and fares for your dates. A flight with a stop can take half a day or more, so a direct flight is usually worth a little extra.
Colombo's airport is at Katunayake near Negombo, which is north of the city. If you are heading into Colombo or south to the coast, keep time for the road after you land.
Sri Lanka uses the same time as India (UTC+5:30), so you do not lose or gain an hour. Your phone clock, alarms and train bookings stay the same.
Best time to visit Sri Lanka: pick your coast first
The best time to visit Sri Lanka depends on which part of the island you want, because two different monsoons hit two different sides. The southwest monsoon, called Yala, brings rain to the west and south coast and the hill country, roughly from April or May to September. The northeast monsoon, called Maha, brings rain to the east and north, roughly from November to March, and is wettest in November and December.
The table below shows the safest months by region. Sources differ by about a month at either end, and the weather changes from year to year, so treat it as a guide and not a promise.
| Region | Best months | Wetter months | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| South and west coast (Galle, Mirissa, Bentota, Hikkaduwa) | December to March | April or May to September | Mirissa whale season runs about November to April |
| Hill country (Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Ella) | December to March | Roughly April or May to September | Nuwara Eliya is cool because of its height |
| Cultural Triangle (Sigiriya, Dambulla, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa) | December to March | October and November are unsettled | Start early in the day for heat |
| East coast and north (Trincomalee, Pasikudah, Arugam Bay) | May to September | November to March | Surf and beach season is the opposite of the south |
If your dates are flexible, February and March are the safest pick for a first trip. The south is dry, the hill country is mostly settled, and whale season is strong. One operator calls October one of the wettest months across the island, so it is worth skipping if you can. Comparing island trips? Our guide to the best time to visit Phu Quoc uses the same month by month idea.
Reading this in October 2026? December is your first realistic window for the south and west coast.
Month by month: what each part of the year is good for
| Months | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| December | South and west coast, hill country and Cultural Triangle. Whale season is on | Busy period. Stays and whale boats can fill up early in December and January |
| January and February | The most settled weather across most of the island, and strong whale watching | Book early because this is high season |
| March | Dry south, good whale and leopard drives, and the northeast monsoon is ending | The first signs of the southwest monsoon can show up by April |
| April | Still a good month for wildlife in Yala and Udawalawe | The south and west start to get wetter |
| May to September | East coast beaches and surf in Trincomalee, Pasikudah and Arugam Bay | The south, west and hill country are in the southwest monsoon |
| October and November | Fewer crowds | Unsettled weather between the two monsoons. October is often very wet |
How many days do you need?
Seven to ten days is enough for one good loop. Sri Lankan roads are slow and hill roads are slower, so a map that looks short can eat a whole day. This table is our planning rule of thumb, not a fixed rule.
| Days | What fits | What to leave out |
|---|---|---|
| 5 to 6 | One region only: Cultural Triangle with Kandy, or Colombo with the south coast | The hill country and the east |
| 7 to 8 | Cultural Triangle, Kandy, Ella side, then a short south coast stay | Safaris and long beach days |
| 10 | The same loop with one extra night in the hill country and a wildlife safari | The east coast |
| 14 | A full circle with the east coast or Yala added | Nothing much |
A first timer route in five stops
This order avoids doubling back. It goes from the airport into the Cultural Triangle, up into the hills, then down to the coast to finish.
Colombo and Negombo: arrival base
Colombo is where most flights land. Treat it as an arrival base and not the main event. If you have a free afternoon, Gangaramaya Temple is a good first stop before you move on.
Sigiriya and Dambulla: the Cultural Triangle
Sigiriya is a rock fortress topped by a ruined palace. Dambulla Cave Temple is the largest and best preserved cave temple complex in Sri Lanka. Go early, because the climbs are hot by late morning.
Kandy: the hill capital
Kandy is known for the Temple of the Tooth, which holds a relic of the Buddha's tooth. It also works as a rest stop between the Cultural Triangle and the tea country. In the evening, Kandy is the place to watch a traditional dance show, and some performers use fire in their act.
Nuwara Eliya and Ella: tea country
Nuwara Eliya sits at about 1,800 m, which gives it some of the coolest weather on the island. Ella is the relaxed stop, with Nine Arch Bridge, Little Adam's Peak and Ella Rock. Ella Rock is a proper hike, so start early and carry water.
If you would rather not manage these long road and rail days yourself, the Sri Lanka group trip handles transport with a trip captain.
Galle and Mirissa: the south coast finish
Galle Fort is a walled old town with a lighthouse, and it is an easy place to walk around. Mirissa is the base for whale watching, and boats leave from Mirissa Harbour early in the morning. The sea can be rough even in season, so plan for seasickness. If you want wildlife on land, Yala is known for leopards and Udawalawe for elephants.
A sample 8 day route on the ground
This is a do it yourself sample built from the five stops above. It is not the day by day plan of our group trip, so check the live trip page for that. Add travel days at both ends for flights.
| Day | Where | Plan |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Colombo or Negombo | Land, rest and keep your ETA, return ticket and hotel booking handy |
| 2 | Dambulla | Road to the Cultural Triangle and the Dambulla Cave Temple |
| 3 | Sigiriya to Kandy | Climb Sigiriya early, then move to Kandy |
| 4 | Kandy | Temple of the Tooth by day and a traditional dance show in the evening |
| 5 | Nuwara Eliya | Go by road to the tea country and the cool air. Nanu Oya is the nearest station |
| 6 | Nanu Oya to Ella | Take the scenic train, then see Nine Arch Bridge and Little Adam's Peak |
| 7 | Ella to the south coast | Hike Ella Rock early, then take a long road day toward Galle or Mirissa |
| 8 | Mirissa and Galle | Whale boat in the morning in season, then Galle Fort in the afternoon |
The Ella train in 2026: what has changed
The Kandy to Ella train is not running end to end as of 14 October 2026, but the scenic Nanu Oya to Ella section is. Cyclone Ditwah hit the island in late November 2025 and damaged the upcountry railway with landslides and washouts. Most guides written before 2026 still describe the old full route, so read this part before you plan a train day.
Here is where things stand. Dates come from news reports and travel sites, and Sri Lanka Railways is the final word.
| Section | Status on 14 October 2026 | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Nanu Oya to Ella | Running since 18 July 2026 | The scenic ride is available |
| Rambukkana to Gampola | Services resumed on 2 October 2026 | Part of the wider recovery |
| Polgahawela to Peradeniya | New daily service from 12 October 2026 | Another step back toward Kandy |
| Kandy to Nanu Oya | Still damaged, no confirmed reopening date | Go by road |
Estimates for a full reopening range from late 2026 to early 2027. The simplest plan is to travel by road from Kandy to Nanu Oya, the station for Nuwara Eliya, and take the train from there. Check the railway before you book hotels around a train day, because tickets and timings can change.
Travellers call the Nanu Oya to Ella ride the "kissing train", because couples like to take photos kissing their partner on board. If you want that photo, or just a window seat, plan your day around this section.
Money and UPI in Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka uses the Sri Lankan rupee (LKR), and UPI helps only in some places. Indian apps can scan LankaQR codes, and PhonePe announced support for it in 2024. About 400,000 merchants have LankaQR, but NPCI International said in March 2026 that many do not display it or offer it to Indian customers.
So keep UPI as a backup. Carry Sri Lankan rupees for tuk tuks, small cafes and entry tickets, and keep a card for hotels. Withdraw or exchange in bigger towns before you head into the hills.
What to book first, in order
Book in this order so that the free and fixed things are done before the busy things fill up.
- Apply for the ETA. It is free, and you need it approved before you fly. Do it a few days early.
- Book a direct flight. Delhi to Colombo is about 3 hours 35 minutes, and a direct flight saves half a day.
- Fix your hill country stays. Build the Ella train day around the Nanu Oya section, and check Sri Lanka Railways first.
- Book the whale boat early if you travel in December or January. One travel guide notes that tours can fill up quickly in these two months.
- Arrange cash and a card. Do not rely on UPI alone.
Is Sri Lanka safe right now?
Sri Lanka is generally considered safe for tourists, and the main tourist areas are open. Colombo and the south coast were largely unaffected by Cyclone Ditwah. The hill country took the worst of it, and some roads and rail sections are still being repaired, so travel times there can be longer than the map suggests.
Use normal city sense with bags and phones, and read your own government's latest travel advisory before you book. If you are travelling solo and want company on the road, a group trip is one way to do it.
Trip captain note: Our trip captains say many international tourists visit Sri Lanka, and English is widely understood in tourist areas, which makes communication easier. They say scams are relatively uncommon and women's safety is generally good, so it can be a great first solo trip for women. Basic travel safety precautions still apply.
What to pack
- Light cotton clothes for the coast and the Cultural Triangle
- A rain jacket, because showers can show up in any month in some part of the island
- One warm layer for Nuwara Eliya and early hill mornings
- Decent clothes for temples, with shoulders and knees covered, and sandals that are easy to take off
- A power bank, a card and some cash
- Your ETA approval, return ticket and hotel booking in one folder
What our trip captains see on the ground
- Weather: Our trip captains say Kandy and Ella are hot, with clear skies on the days they are there. Pack light clothes and carry water for the walks.
- Kandy evenings: Kandy is where groups usually catch a traditional dance show. The performers use fire in their act, and the fire dance is the part most travellers talk about afterwards.
- The Nanu Oya to Ella train: Travellers call this ride the "kissing train". Couples like to take photos kissing their partner on the train, so expect a few of those moments in the carriage and at the doors.
Who this trip suits and who it does not
Sri Lanka suits you if:

- You are happy to share long road days with a group
It may not suit you if:
- You want one resort and no moving around
