Kashmir Travel Guide 2026: Best Time, Routes, Costs and Safety for Indian Travellers

Leave a Comment / All Blogs / By The Travel Story Team / October 17, 2026
Quick Answer: A 5–6 day Kashmir trip covers Srinagar, Gulmarg, Sonamarg and Pahalgam. Visit April–June for pleasant weather, September–October for autumn colours, or December–February for snow. Fly to Srinagar or travel via Jammu by train or bus.

Most people think Kashmir is one place you can finish in three days. It is really four stops in one valley, each a couple of hours apart on a mountain road, and the month you pick changes what each stop looks like. This guide gives you the months, routes, a sample plan, costs and the honest parts most guides skip.

If you're planning to visit Kashmir without stressing over how to book stays and transport or what to do in Kashmir then you can join The Travel Story Winter Kashmir Backpacking group trip with a trip captain and a batch of 12 to 16 travellers aged 18 to 35. It covers a Dal Lake houseboat, Gulmarg, Sonamarg and Pahalgam, and you can join from Delhi on a sleeper bus or directly in Srinagar.

Key takeaways

  • The main Kashmir circuit has four stops, Srinagar, Gulmarg, Sonamarg and Pahalgam, and each outside stop is roughly 2 to 3 hours from Srinagar by road.
  • April to June and September to October are the easiest months for sightseeing, and December to February is the snow season.
  • Chillai Kalan, Kashmir's harshest 40 days, runs from about 21 December to 31 January, and Gulmarg and Sonamarg see their most reliable snow in this window.
  • Prepaid SIM cards issued outside Jammu and Kashmir get barred in the valley, so carry a postpaid connection or plan around it.
  • A flight from Delhi to Srinagar takes under two hours. The other route is a train to Jammu Tawi or Katra, then the Vande Bharat on to Srinagar.
  • Five to six days are enough for the full circuit, and the Gulmarg gondola is best booked on the official portal.

Where do you actually go in Kashmir?

kashmir-valley-winter-snow-view.jpg

Kashmir travel means one valley and four main stops. Srinagar is the base, with Dal Lake and the Mughal Gardens. Gulmarg is the snow stop, Sonamarg is the glacier stop, and Pahalgam is the river valley stop.

Kashmir is not a place you finish in three days. It is four stops, each a couple of hours apart, and the month you pick decides which of them is at its best.

Best time to visit Kashmir

The best time to visit Kashmir depends on what you came to see: tulips in spring, green meadows in summer, chinar colour in October, or snow from December to February. Pick the picture in your head first, then pick the month.

kashmir-best-time-month-by-month.jpg

What each part of the year gives you in Kashmir, and what to watch for.

Months What you get Watch out for
Late March to mid April Srinagar's Tulip Garden in bloom. The 2026 season ran from 16 March to about mid April Dates move with the weather each year
April to June Mild weather and green gardens, the easiest months for sightseeing Houseboats and hotels fill early in tulip weeks
July and August Warmest months. Srinagar is roughly 18 to 30 degrees Celsius in July Busy season, and rain is possible
September and October Clear skies, quieter roads, and chinar leaves turning red and gold in October. October is roughly 6 to 23 degrees Celsius Evenings get cold quickly
November Cold weather, early snow at higher altitudes and fewer visitors Not green and not deep snow
December to February Snow in Gulmarg and Sonamarg, and Dal Lake partly frozen at the edges Nights well below freezing, and heavy snow can close the highway for a while

Chillai Kalan, explained

Chillai Kalan is the 40 day stretch of Kashmir's harshest winter, running from about 21 December to 31 January. The milder 20 day Chillai Khurd and the 10 day Chillai Bachha follow it. This is when Gulmarg and Sonamarg see their most reliable snow, and when the valley looks like the photos that made you want to come. On the New Year special, late December temperatures are expected between minus 5 and 5 degrees Celsius, and colder at night.

Chillai-Kalan-frozen-dal-lake.jpg

Myth: Srinagar is where the snow is

Snow is most reliable in Gulmarg and Sonamarg, not in Srinagar. Srinagar often gets light snow or slush rather than deep powder. If snow is why you are coming, plan around Gulmarg and Sonamarg. You can take a day trip to both locations each day without staying there. Hotels in Gulmarg and Sonamarg are on the expensive side as compared to Srinagar.

dal-lake-houseboat-evening.jpg

What this means for October 2026 to March 2027

October and November bring cold weather and early snow at higher altitudes, and they are gentler than deep winter. For deep snow, aim for late December to January. The Kashmir New Year special is a single batch from 26 December to 2 January with a bonfire countdown in Srinagar.

How to reach Kashmir from Delhi

The fastest way to reach Kashmir from Delhi is a direct flight to Srinagar, which takes under two hours. Trains and buses go as far as Jammu or Katra, and you then continue by train or road.

Ways to reach Srinagar from Delhi, and what each one means for your trip.

Way to go Time Good to know
Flight to Srinagar (SXR) Under 2 hours Fastest option. It also avoids winter highway closures
Train to Jammu Tawi or Katra, then Vande Bharat to Srinagar Katra to Srinagar takes about 3 hours Two separate bookings. Check the connection and book early
AC sleeper bus to Jammu, then road to Srinagar Overnight journey The route our Delhi to Delhi option uses
Own car A long journey Not advised in one push. Split the drive at Jammu

delhi-to-srinagar-routes-infographic.jpg
The train, and what changed

Kashmir has had a rail link since the Vande Bharat started running from Katra to Srinagar on 6 June 2025. Regular Jammu Tawi to Srinagar services began on 2 May 2026. From Delhi you still need two bookings, one to Jammu Tawi or Katra and one onward to Srinagar. A direct Delhi to Srinagar train has been announced for later, no regular service in October 2026, so check Indian Railways before you plan around one.

The highway in winter

The Qazigund to Banihal stretch of the Jammu to Srinagar highway can shut for a while in heavy snow. This is routine winter management, not an emergency. Flying into Srinagar avoids the risk.

If you plan to go on to Ladakh by road from Srinagar, see our guide on how to reach Ladakh from Delhi, which covers the Zoji La route.

The four stops, one by one

Distances and heights for the main Kashmir stops. Road distances vary a little by source.

Stop From Srinagar Typical drive Height Known for
Srinagar Base None About 1,600 m Dal Lake, houseboats, Mughal Gardens
Gulmarg About 50 km About 2 hours 2,650 m Gondola, snow, beginner skiing
Sonamarg About 80 to 100 km About 2.5 to 3 hours About 2,740 to 2,800 m Thajiwas Glacier, meadows
Pahalgam About 90 to 95 km About 2 hours About 2,200 m Aru, Betaab and Chandanwari valleys

Srinagar: the base

Srinagar is where most Kashmir trips start and end. Dal Lake is the heart of it, with shikaras (small wooden boats) drifting past houseboats and a floating vegetable market at sunrise. The Mughal Gardens, including Shalimar Bagh, are an easy half day, and Shankaracharya Temple sits about 1,000 feet above the city with one of the best views of Srinagar. In spring the Tulip Garden is the big draw. Book at least one night on a houseboat.

Gulmarg: snow and the gondola

Gulmarg sits at 2,650 metres and is about 50 km from Srinagar. The Gulmarg Gondola carries you up toward Apharwat Peak in two phases. Phase 1 goes to Kongdoori and Phase 2 continues to Apharwat Peak. Book on the official portal run by the Jammu and Kashmir Cable Car Corporation at jammukashmircablecar.com. Tickets are slot based, so buying at the counter is not guaranteed, and ticket scams are a known problem in peak season. In winter you can also try beginner skiing and snowboarding, or take an ATV from Tangmarg to Drung Waterfall.

Sonamarg: the golden meadow

The name Sonamarg comes from two Kashmiri words, son and marg, meaning gold and meadow. It sits at about 2,740 to 2,800 metres, which is well below Leh at 3,500 metres. The main stop is Thajiwas Glacier, about 4 km away. You can walk it or hire a pony. Beyond Sonamarg the road climbs to Zoji La, the pass into Ladakh, which can close for a day or two after heavy snow even in season.

Pahalgam: the Valley of Shepherds

Pahalgam is known as the Valley of Shepherds, and travellers also call it Mini Switzerland for its meadows and pine slopes. The classic stops are Aru Valley, Betaab Valley and Chandanwari. Local taxi unions control these routes, so outside vehicles hand over to union cabs. On our trips this is already covered in the package price. Some sites near Pahalgam were closed after April 2025 and have reopened in stages, so ask what is open for your dates.

How many days do you need?

Five to six days are enough for the full Kashmir circuit. This table is our planning rule of thumb, not a fixed rule.

What fits into 3, 4 to 5 and 5 to 6 days in Kashmir.

4 to 5 Srinagar, Gulmarg and either Sonamarg or Pahalgam One of the two
5 to 6 The full circuit: Srinagar, Gulmarg, Sonamarg and Pahalgam Nothing major

A sample 6 day plan

This sample uses the same stop order as our Winter Kashmir Backpacking trip. It is a do it yourself outline, not the trip itself, so check the live trip page for the real day plan.

Network, cash and ID

  • SIM cards: Prepaid numbers issued outside Jammu and Kashmir get barred in the valley. Postpaid connections work, and Jio and Airtel give the most reliable coverage in Srinagar, Gulmarg, Sonamarg and Pahalgam.
  • Cash: ATMs and card payments get unreliable in Pahalgam and Gulmarg. Withdraw cash in Srinagar before you go.
  • ID: Carry a valid original photo ID, such as Aadhaar or a passport. Security checks can take longer in peak season.

What to pack

For winter, pack thermals, a windproof and waterproof outer layer, woollen socks, gloves and snow boots. Layers work better than one heavy jacket. Gulmarg, Sonamarg and Pahalgam are higher than Srinagar, so carry at least one warm layer in every season.

Is Kashmir safe right now?

Kashmir's main tourist circuit is open and receiving visitors, and Srinagar, Gulmarg, Sonamarg and Pahalgam all have working hotels, guides and transport. Our group trips run with a trip captain throughout, and winter is usually quieter than peak summer.

Being honest, Kashmir's situation can change. However, Kashmir is heavily guarded with Indian forces that keeps law and order intact. But it is better to be prepared for every circumstances, read the latest government travel advisory in the week you fly.

Food to try

Start the day with noon chai and girda or bakarkhani, which are Kashmiri breads. Try harissa, a winter only dish, and a Wazwan spread of rogan josh, yakhni, gushtaba and tabak maaz. End the day with kahwa.

What our trip captains see on the ground

Kashmir is famous for its stunning landscapes, especially Gulmarg, Sonmarg, and Pahalgam. Our captains particularly love Sonmarg for its beautiful mountain views and the Thajiwas Glacier. If you have extra time, explore quieter places like Yusmarg, Doodhpathri, and Gurez Valley.

A houseboat stay on Dal Lake is a must-try experience. Local families operate many houseboats, and the lake's floating market, Meena Bazaar, offers food, clothes, jewellery, and everyday essentials. Based on recent personal observations, the lake can feel crowded during peak season, so one night on a houseboat is usually enough to enjoy the experience.

For Gulmarg Gondola, try going early to avoid some of the peak-hour rush. In winter, Srinagar's snow conditions and the Qazigund–Banihal road situation can vary, so check local updates before travelling.

Who Kashmir suits and who it does not

Kashmir suits you if:

  • You want snow, lakes and meadows in one trip
  • You like a group or a trip captain handling roads and stays

It may not suit you if:

  • You want a single resort and no travel between stops
  • You want every activity included, since the gondola, ATV and pony rides are extra

Plan it with a group

travel-story-kashmir-group-batch.jpg

If this plan feels like a lot to organise, the Winter Kashmir Backpacking trip puts stays, transport and a trip captain in one booking. Our group trips run from October to early March, so for a summer visit, use this guide to plan on your own. Check the live trip page for the day plan, inclusions and dates. Looking at the New Year?
