Most Kashmir plans online are a list of places with a day number stuck on each. That is how people end up driving five hours to stand in one meadow for forty minutes. This 7 day plan starts from the map instead. It keeps one base in Srinagar, sends you out on day trips, and tells you what to skip when time runs short.
If you don't want to handle the logistic Then our Winter Kashmir Backpacking trip follows this exact plan: 7 days from Delhi by AC sleeper bus, or 5 nights and 6 days if you start in Srinagar. It includes a Dal Lake houseboat night, a trip captain and the union cab charges for Pahalgam's valleys, and it starts from Rs 21,499 per person on triple sharing from Delhi (Rs 17,499 from Srinagar)
The 7 day Kashmir plan at a glance
This plan covers Srinagar, Gulmarg, Sonamarg and Pahalgam, and it skips everything else on purpose. It follows our Winter Kashmir trip day for day.
| Day | Main place | Night |
|---|---|---|
| 0 (Delhi start only) | Delhi to Jammu by AC sleeper bus | On the bus |
| 1 | Jammu to Srinagar, Dal Lake | Houseboat, Srinagar |
| 2 | Gulmarg day trip | Hotel, Srinagar |
| 3 | Sonamarg day trip | Hotel, Srinagar |
| 4 | Srinagar to Pahalgam | Hotel, Pahalgam |
| 5 | Pahalgam to Srinagar, Mughal gardens | Hotel, Srinagar |
| 6 | Journey home | On the bus (Delhi start) |
If you fly into Srinagar, you join on Day 1 and leave on Day 6, and the plan is the same.
How Srinagar, Gulmarg, Sonamarg and Pahalgam connect
Srinagar is the hub, and the other three are separate spokes. Pahalgam and Gulmarg sit on opposite sides of Srinagar, so the road between them runs through the Srinagar area. That is why this plan returns to Srinagar after each trip.
The figures below are typical ranges from tour operator itineraries and map listings. Operators quote slightly different numbers for the same road, so treat them as approximate and never as guaranteed times.
| Route | Approx distance | Approx drive | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Srinagar to Gulmarg | 50 to 56 km | 1.5 to 2 hours | The last stretch from Tangmarg (about 13 km) is a climb; chains are used in snow |
| Srinagar to Sonamarg | about 80 km | 2 to 3 hours | One way; plan a full day |
| Srinagar to Pahalgam | 88 to 99 km | 2 to 3 hours | Pampore saffron fields lie on the way |
| Pahalgam to Gulmarg | 137 to 148 km | 3.5 to 5 hours | Not used in this plan |
| Jammu to Srinagar | about 250 to 270 km | Most of a day | Winter closures are possible |
Places left out on purpose. Baisaran has been reported closed to visitors in 2026 and as per our ground team Baisaran will reopen after cable car work is done. Doodhpathri and Yusmarg each need an extra day, and reports on their access conflict.
Kashmir 7 days itinerary, day by day
Day 0: Delhi to Jammu (Delhi start only)
You meet the group in Delhi and take an AC sleeper bus to Jammu. You arrive the next morning.
- Stay: Overnight on the bus.
- Skip if you fly: Start at Day 1 and meet the group at Dal Lake.
Day 1: Jammu to Srinagar and Dal Lake
You travel by road from Jammu to Srinagar and reach the city in the evening. After check-in on a Dal Lake houseboat, you take a 1 hour shikara ride. Fliers spend the day at Dal Lake.
- Drive: Jammu to Srinagar is about 250 to 270 km on NH44. Add a breakfast stop.
- Stay: Houseboat, Dal Lake.
- Season limit: NH44 can close for days after snow or landslides. In January 2026 it stayed shut three days in a row.
- Skip if late: The shikara ride moves to Day 5.
Day 2: Gulmarg day trip
After breakfast, drive to Gulmarg, at 2,650 m. The climb from Tangmarg gives the best valley views of the day. In Gulmarg you can ride the Gondola, or take an ATV ride to Drung waterfall from Tangmarg. Both cost extra. You return to Srinagar for the night.
- Drive: 50 to 56 km, about 1.5 to 2 hours each way.
- Stay: Hotel, Srinagar.
- Book ahead: The Gondola, on the official portal. Phase 1 and Phase 2 are separate tickets.
- Season limit: Phase 2 can shut in bad weather. Vehicles use chains on the climb in snow.
- Skip if late: Phase 2, then the ATV ride.
Day 3: Sonamarg day trip
After breakfast, drive to Sonamarg, the Meadow of Gold. Thajiwas Glacier is about 4 km from the town, and you can hire a pony at your own cost. You return to Srinagar for the night.
- Drive: About 80 km, 2 to 3 hours each way.
- Stay: Hotel, Srinagar.
- Season limit: The Thajiwas trail is generally reached from about May to September and is closed in deep winter. Heavy snow can also shut the road. Ask your captain for the fallback.
- Skip if late: The far end of the Sindh valley.
Day 4: Srinagar to Pahalgam
After breakfast, drive to Pahalgam, called the Valley of Shepherds. You see Aru Valley, Betaab Valley and Chandanwari, then check in at your hotel.
- Drive: 88 to 99 km, 2 to 3 hours.
- Stay: Hotel, Pahalgam.
- Season limit: See the Pahalgam status below. Local union taxis run these valleys, and our trip includes their charges.
- Skip if late: Chandanwari first, then Aru Valley.
Day 5: Pahalgam to Srinagar and the gardens
After breakfast, check out and drive back to Srinagar. You visit Shalimar Bagh and Shankaracharya Temple, which looks over the city.
- Drive: 2 to 3 hours.
- Stay: Hotel, Srinagar.
- Skip if late: The temple.
Day 6: The journey home
Srinagar guests are dropped at the airport. Delhi guests drive to Jammu, move to the sleeper bus that evening and reach Delhi the next morning.
- Season limit: The drive is about 250 to 270 km and the bus leaves the same evening. A highway closure can break that link.
- Rule for flights: Book an afternoon or evening flight from Srinagar, not a morning one.
Pahalgam status in 2026
Pahalgam has had on-and-off access to some sites since April 2025, and reports do not fully agree. Betaab Valley and Aru Valley were reported to open in 2026, with visitors asked to leave by about 4 pm in an April report. Chandanwari was reopened in June 2026, with vehicle access reported only up to Lower Chandanwari. Baisaran was reported closed in 2026. Ask your hotel on arrival, and treat each site as a bonus, not a certainty.
Where you sleep
You stay in Srinagar for four of the five nights in a stay, and in Pahalgam for one. Every night is counted once.
| Night | Where | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Day 0 | Bus (Delhi start) | Travel to Jammu |
| Day 1 | Houseboat, Srinagar | Dal Lake on arrival |
| Day 2 | Hotel, Srinagar | Gulmarg is a day trip |
| Day 3 | Hotel, Srinagar | Sonamarg is a day trip |
| Day 4 | Hotel, Pahalgam | Betaab, Aru and Chandanwari without rushing |
| Day 5 | Hotel, Srinagar | Gardens, then departure |
| Day 6 | Bus (Delhi start) | Travel to Delhi |
That is 5 nights in stays, plus 2 bus nights from Delhi. You change hotels only once, for Pahalgam, so keep your Srinagar bag light.
Best season for this 7 day plan
The plan stays the same all year, and the season changes what each day delivers. We do not promise snow, flowers or any road on a fixed date, because all of them move with the weather. Our fixed departures run from October to March.
| Season | What works | What to watch | Change to the plan |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spring and early summer (March to June) | The Srinagar tulip garden for a few weeks, the Mughal gardens | The garden opened 16 March in 2026 and 26 March in 2025. Early roads may still hold snow | Put the tulip garden on Day 5 or Day 1 |
| Summer (June to August) | All four places are usually reachable. Thajiwas is generally reached May to September | Crowds and slow roads. Pilgrim traffic around Pahalgam in the Amarnath Yatra, whose dates change yearly | Leave early and book the Gondola ahead |
| Autumn (mid September to November) | Chinar colour in the Srinagar gardens, mostly mid October to mid November | Colder evenings. First snow can reach higher ground | Give Day 5 more time in the gardens |
| Winter (December to February) | Gulmarg snow, usually from mid to late December. Chillai Kalan starts on 21 December | NH44 can close for days. Phase 2 can shut. The Thajiwas trail is generally closed | Add a buffer day and keep the Sonamarg day flexible |
Autumn colour dates differ between sources, so treat that row as a window.
How to reach Kashmir for this plan
- From Delhi with us. AC sleeper bus to Jammu on Day 0, then road to Srinagar on Day 1.
- By flight. Srinagar airport has direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and other cities. This is the simplest start for the plan.
- By train. There is no direct Delhi to Srinagar train as of September 2026. You take a train from Delhi to Katra (the fastest Vande Bharat takes about 8 hours), then the Katra to Srinagar Vande Bharat, about 3 hours. Check IRCTC for your date.
- Private cab and union taxis. A cab covers transfers and Srinagar-based trips. For the inner routes in Pahalgam (Aru, Betaab, Chandanwari), Sonamarg (Thajiwas, Zero Point) and the last stretch to the Gondola, Our on ground team report that local union taxis do the work.
- Self-driving. The union rule means your own car may not run the inner routes. Add hairpin bends and chains in snow, and self-driving makes little sense in winter.
Do not treat any drive time here as a promise. Weather, traffic, security checks and road repairs all change it.
Budget for a 7 day Kashmir trip
Our group trip starts from Rs 21,499 per person on triple sharing from Delhi, or Rs 17,499 from Srinagar, The trip includes:
- 3 hotel nights in Srinagar, 1 in Pahalgam and 1 houseboat night
- Breakfast and dinner
- AC sleeper bus from Delhi to Jammu and back, and road transport in Kashmir
- A 1 hour shikara ride and a trip captain
- Aru, Betaab and Chandanwari union cab charges
Not included: the Gondola, ATV ride, ponies, entry fees, personal expenses, and highway meals.
If you plan it yourself, we do not list rupee figures because Kashmir prices move with the season and fuel. Build your own number with this formula:
| Cost item | How to estimate |
|---|---|
| Flights or trains | Live fares for your dates, per person |
| Cab for transfers and day trips | Written quote per day x days you need a vehicle |
| Local union taxis | One local trip each for Pahalgam and Sonamarg; agree the rate first |
| Stay | 5 nights x room rate x rooms |
| Food | Daily food budget x people x days |
| Gondola and activities | Check the official portal; Phase 1 and Phase 2 are separate |
| Buffer | We suggest at least 10 percent |
Practical tips and common mistakes
- Keep buffer time. Do not book a flight on the same day as a long drive.
- Check roads every morning. Ask your hotel about Gulmarg and Sonamarg roads, and NH44 before Day 1 and Day 6.
- Book the Gondola early. Buy both phases if you want Apharwat, and check operating hours on the portal.
- Carry warm layers in every season. Gulmarg sits at 2,650 m, and evenings are cool.
- Wear shoes with grip. Meadow paths and snow become slippery.
- Keep one indoor option. Markets or a houseboat afternoon save a rainy day.
Common mistakes
- Planning Baisaran. It has been reported closed in 2026, so leave it out.
- Expecting your Srinagar cab to run Aru and Betaab. Local taxis handle those routes.
- Changing hotels every night. Use Srinagar as the base.
- Booking a morning flight on Day 6. One late road can cost you the flight.
- Reading drive times as promises. Add 30 to 60 minutes for every hill leg (our rule of thumb).
- Assuming a direct train from Delhi. There is none yet.
Who this plan suits, and who it does not
- It suits first-time visitors who want a realistic route and clear trade-offs. Our fixed departures are for ages 18 to 35.
- It does not suit trekkers planning the Kashmir Great Lakes, or travellers who want Ladakh and Kashmir on one trip.
