Highlight

Most people planning a Ladakh trip start with the same question. How far is Khardung La from Leh, and is it actually doable in a normal trip. Here is the honest answer. Khardung La sits about 40 kilometres from Leh, and the drive up takes roughly two hours depending on traffic and road conditions. It is regularly called the second highest motorable pass in the world, sitting at around 5,359 metres. Old signboards at the top still claim a higher number, but modern GPS readings settle on this figure. Either way, you are standing higher than most people will ever stand in their life, and the air genuinely feels different up there. This 5 night, 6 day trip takes you from Leh, up and over Khardung La, into Nubra Valley for a night among sand dunes and double humped camels, across to Pangong Tso for a night by the lake everyone has seen in photos but nobody quite believes until they are standing in front of it, and back to Leh through Chang La, another of the highest motorable passes on earth. You do not need to be an experienced traveler for this. You need two days in Leh first to let your body adjust to the altitude, decent gear for cold nights, and a willingness to spend long hours in a vehicle looking at landscapes that do not look like anything else in India. Starts at Rs 18,999. Fixed departures run from July through November.
